Cash Prizes
Up to $2,800 will be given away! The Overall Amateur Division winner will receive $500. In addition to the Overall Amateur Winner, cash prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each category as follows:

Amateur Division
  • All first place winners will receive $200
  • All second place winners will receive $125
  • All third place winners will receive $75
Commercial Division
  • All first place winners will receive $100
  • All second place winners will receive $75
  • All third place winners will receive $50
There must be at least 10 entries in any given category for prize money to be awarded. The Overall Amateur Division winner will receive $200 from their first place winning with an additional $300 for the best overall score, making a total prize of $500.

Why does the Amateur division get more cash prizes than the Commercial division?
Quite simply, the commercial division entries are already successfully selling their sauces and all winners receive the winners logo that can be used on promotional material. The additional prize money awarded in the Amateur division can be used to help jump-start the winners in pursuing commercial availability of their sauce.

Judging Criteria For Tasting Categories
There are a total of four judging categories:
  • Eastern-Style Sauce
  • Western-Style Sauce
  • Rub
  • Unique
Product tasting entry scores will be judged for:
  • Appearance
  • Aroma
  • Spice Blend
  • Originality
  • Flavor (most heavily weighted)
  • Overall impression
The judging panel will be made up of food industry professionals, including executive chefs, restaurant owners, culinary instructors, food writers and other food industry leaders. Judges subject to change due to their schedules.

All product sampling will be conducted using fair, impartial, and blind judging standards.

All products entered in the contest will be judged "as is."

The overall Amateur Division winner will be determined by the total highest scoring product of all entries received in the Amateur division. Commercial entries are not eligible for the overall Amateur Division winner category. In case of a tie, the total prize money will be divided among the top scoring products.

There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes available for each category. All staff members of NCBBQ.com will be excluded from judging. The decision of the judges is final and in no way reflects the opinions of the sponsoring organizations.

A full list of winners will be posted on or around November 20, 2008.
